Imo Governor-elect's deputy forced to resign

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Owerri—THE political horse-trading and intrigues currently going on in Imo State since Chief Ikedi Ohakim emerged as governor-elect, took a disappointing dimension weekend as his running mate in the last election, Mrs.Ada Okwuonu, was forced to resign.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the former Commissioner for Finance in Achike Udenwa’s first term in office, Chief Ngozi Amaliri, has not only been tipped to take the slot but has also assumed the position.

It was not very clear at press time what led to the sudden and un-ceremonial replacement of the female deputy governor-elect but an impeccable source told Vanguard that she was forced to resign her position in favour of Amaliri.

Some residents canvassed the opinion that since Udenwa’s administration assisted in no small measure in the gubernatorial electoral victory of Chief Orji Uzor Kalu’s Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), he should also have a hand in who takes over from him and/or the formation of a new cabinet.

Others however thought that since the position of deputy governor was zoned to Owerri senatorial zone and since Mrs. Okwuonu comes from Mbaise as the senator-elect, Mrs. Chris Anyanwu, the slot should go to Ngor Okpala, Amaliri’s country home.

It was further gathered that Mrs. Okwuonu who lost out in the political power equation would be compensated with the post of Commissioner for Women Affairs, even as it was not very clear at press time how Imo women and the Mbaise axis would take the new arrangement.

Is that allowed? Can u imagine? Its only in Nigeria that THAT can happen.

THE DRAMA STARTED WHEN INEC'S CHAIRMAN- IWU SAID D GOVERNOR SHOULD COME FROM MBANO/ OKIGWE COS THE AREA HASNT RULED IMO. (IWU IS MBANO) BUT THE PPLE DIDNT WANT ARURUME THOUGH HE'S MABNO, THAT WAS WHY PPA'S CANDIDATE OHAKIM GOT IT. AND SINCE ACHIKE PLAYED AN IMPT. ROLE IN INSTALLING HIM, HE THINKS HE SHLD DICTATE SOME TUNES, MEANWHILE OHAKIM WILL MOVE OVER TO PDP AFTER 2/3 MONTHS.

This just boils down to igbo men and their inferiority complex. Not all igbo men are like this though but meeeeeeeeeen............ why are they tripping about a woman being a Dep- Gov. The fact that they decided to compensate her with a job as commissioner for women affairs just means they think that is where she ought to be. How sad

At least the westerners are more open than the easterners, lagos had a female deputy gov who lasted for a while (I cannot remember if she was kicked out or lost a second term)

It sure seems like a complex issue to me especially since they decided to make her commissioner for women's affairs. Thatz like saying you are a woman, go deal with women. Maybe its more of an ego/macho thing than an inferiority complex issue; dunno about that :smt102
